Another Eid al-Fitr Passes for Displaced Persons in Northern West Bank Camps Without Shelter

Another Eid al-Fitr arrives while internally displaced persons (IDPs) in camps across the northern West Bank continue to live without adequate shelter, protection, or access to basic services. Despite the festive significance of this occasion, thousands remain forcibly displaced, unable to return to their homes, and enduring precarious humanitarian conditions.

This situation raises serious concerns under international human rights law and international humanitarian law. The ongoing displacement, coupled with the lack of safe, voluntary, and dignified return, may constitute a violation of fundamental rights, including the right to adequate housing, the right to security of person, and the prohibition of arbitrary displacement. The continued denial of essential services—such as water, healthcare, and sanitation—further exacerbates the vulnerability of affected populations, particularly women, children, and the elderly.

Relevant legal frameworks, including the Guiding Principles on Internal Displacement, affirm the right of displaced persons to protection, humanitarian assistance, and durable solutions, including return, resettlement, or local integration. The persistence of displacement during Eid underscores the failure to uphold these obligations and highlights the urgent need for immediate and coordinated intervention.

Duty bearers are called upon to ensure the protection of civilians, facilitate unhindered humanitarian access, and take all necessary measures to guarantee safe and dignified solutions for displaced populations. The international community must also intensify its efforts to ensure accountability and uphold the rights and dignity of those affected.

Eid, a time traditionally associated with dignity, family unity, and social solidarity, is once again overshadowed by displacement and deprivation for many—underscoring the pressing need for justice, protection, and lasting solutions.
